A girl smiles in a UNICEF tent school, on the first day of classes in the remote village of Jacquot Merlin, Haiti. The crayons, exercise books, pencils and other school supplies on her desk are from a newly delivered UNICEF school-in-a box kit, containing teaching and learning materials for students. A month after the January 12 earthquake the UNICEF tent school opened in the village of Jacquot Merlin, in a remote mountain area above Port-au-Prince, the capital.
When a whole community takes action the outcome can certainly be successful!
In an effort to help the children affected from the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, Appling County High School asked from its entire district to pitch in and participate in raising funds. Appling County Primary, Appling County Elementary, Appling County Middle and Altamaha Elementary School joined together to organize, coordinate and host a variety of activities to raise funds for the children of Haiti.
Faculty and students participated in "Dress Down Day" and "Penny Wars" which was a competition between classes raising the most funds. Local churches and community organizations donated to the schools’ efforts as well. However, "Hope for Haiti Basketball Tournament" held two weeks after the earthquake, was the main event everyone was waiting for. Eleven teams participated and each team consisted of former Appling High School players who took time out of their busy college schedules to get involved.
The total amount raised from all the activities and that were contributed to UNICEF was $6,157.56.
Without the perseverance of the thousands of volunteers, UNICEF wouldn’t be able to move accomplish its lifesaving work for children worldwide, specifically in this case, the children of Haiti. On behalf of the many lives you have touched, thank you for sharing your efforts in our mission of saving children’s lives.
