Team UNICEF

UNICEF has partnered with the 2009 ING New York City Marathon as an opportunity to build a new and exciting outreach and fundraising strategy. The members of Team UNICEF are active citizens running toward the day when zero children die from preventable causes, an attainable goal by which UNICEF offers the strength, knowledge, and efficiency to get it done. Team UNICEF believes that no child should ever die from a preventable cause. Yet, every day, 25,000 do. The members of Team UNICEF believe that zero preventable deaths is the finish line.

Each member of Team UNICEF has committed to raising a minimum of $3,500 to help UNICEF achieve the day of zero preventable deaths of children worldwide.

What does $3,500 buy?

  • 7 water pumps, which will help keep 7 different communities safe from deadly waterborne illnesses.
  • 350 HIV test kits, allowing 3,500 mothers to take the first step to preventing the spread of mother-to-child HIV/AIDS.
  • 15 school-in-a-box kits, helping 1200 children receive temporary schooling after an emergency situation.

For the inaugural Team UNICEF, the goal is to raise over $100,000, which will benefit UNICEF’s work life-saving work in over 150 countries world-wide.

Malik Abdul

Malik was first introduced to the concept of Team UNICEF as an intern at the United Nations Headquarters in 2008. Malik has embarked on a unique mission, one he has titled 2 Marathons 3 Weeks. Running the Chicago Marathon on October 11 and the New York City Marathon on November 1 may be a daunting task, however, as part of Team UNICEF Malik is dedicated to completed his objective and raising $3,500 towards his and UNICEF’s mission to save lives. Malik pledges to run the last mile of the New York City Marathon barefoot if he reaches his fundraising goal by race-day, as a means to create awareness of the brutal conditions children around the world are forced to live in.
