A girl sits on a cot at an outdoor camp in Jala Bela Village in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. 80% of the village's homes have been destroyed, and an estimated 2.5 million of the province's 3.5 million residents have been affected by the disaster.
Devastating rains and flooding has affected more than 15 million people in Pakistan. With more than 8.5 million children affected—3.5 million of them in desperate need—time is of the essence in delivering lifesaving supplies.
UNICEF has had a presence in Pakistan since 1948 and was able to respond to the emergency immediately. We have already sent humanitarian supplies to flood victims to address the immediate health, nutrition, water and sanitation needs. But with the number of people affected by the flooding exceeding the number of people affected by the 2004 tsunami, the Haiti earthquake and the recent earthquake in Pakistan combined, more funding is urgently needed.
In the coming days and weeks, UNICEF will scale up the distribution of water—a feat not possible without the support of donors. UNICEF will continue to deliver services and supplies as needed, including hygiene kits, medicine, water purification tablets, portable toilets, blankets, school-in-a box kits, emergency nutrition services, immunization services to aid in the relief efforts.
