A man carries an injured child outside Hotel Villa Creole in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 after the strongest earthquake in more than 200 years struck Haiti.
As you may already know, just before 5 p.m., local time, on Tuesday, the region's largest earthquake in modern history devastated Haiti. The epicenter was located just a few miles from its heavily-populated capital of Port-au-Prince.
With an estimated 3 million affected by the disaster, UNICEF is deploying necessary supplies to Jacmel and Port-au-Prince as quickly as possible to assist with recovery efforts including clean water and sanitation, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter.
UNICEF will also focus on children who have become separated from their families to protect them from harm or exploitation.
As a U.S. Fund for UNICEF Volunteer your role is to inform community members about the situation and engage them in the solution. We encourage you to do outreach:
- Host a fundraiser
- Educate your friends and family
- Update your Facebook and Twitter pages
- Attend an event or fundraiser
- And most importantly keep the victims of the earthquake in your thoughts
